Why do many hotels have no lock on the bathroom door?

I discovered something very interesting. After I checked into a hotel in Barcelona, I found no lock on the bathroom door when I was about to shower. It seems that almost all hotel bathrooms are unlocked. Why do many hotels have no lock on the bathroom door?

It’s true that many hotels, especially in Europe, opt not to have locks on bathroom doors. There are several reasons for this design choice:

  1. Safety Concerns: One of the primary reasons is guest safety. A locked door could delay emergency access if a guest were to have an accident, fall, or become unwell while in the bathroom. In such situations, every second counts, and having an unlocked door allows hotel staff or other guests to assist more quickly.
  2. Simplicity and Maintenance: Locks can break or malfunction. By not having a lock on the bathroom door, hotels reduce the number of maintenance requests related to faulty locks. It’s one less thing that can go wrong in a room.
  3. Cultural Norms: In some cultures and regions, locking bathroom doors, especially in private spaces like hotel rooms, isn’t a common practice. The expectation is that privacy is respected without the need for a lock.
  4. Design and Aesthetics: Modern hotels often emphasize open spaces and minimalistic design elements. In some newer hotels, you might even find bathrooms with glass walls (sometimes with switchable opacity) or open designs that blend with the rest of the room. A lock might be considered unnecessary or contrary to the intended aesthetic in such designs.
  5. Assumption of Privacy: Hotel rooms are private spaces typically shared by families, couples, or individuals. The assumption is that if you’re sharing a room with someone, you’re comfortable enough with them not to require a lock, or you can communicate about bathroom usage.
  6. Cost Considerations: While the cost of a lock is minimal, when constructing or renovating hundreds of rooms, even small savings can add up.

If you prefer a lock on the bathroom door for personal comfort, you should check with the hotel when booking. Some might have specific rooms with different amenities, or they might be able to offer a solution or alternative to ensure your comfort during your stay.
